East Gwillimbury (EG) is home to a strong advanced manufacturing sector, with a 10% and growing share of the local labour force devoted to this industry.
Firms include manufacturers in fabricators, food products, furniture and textiles, electrical products, electronics and pharmaceuticals, as well as a variety of construction-related industries, such as architectural metals, cement/concrete manufacturing, wood processing and products, and automotive parts.
In 2020, food manufacturing had the largest sector presence in EG, by number of payrolled businesses (six), followed by fabricated metal product manufacturing (five), wood product manufacturing (three) and chemical manufacturing (three). (Target Industry Snapshot, 2020)
Large manufacturing companies in EG include Multimatic, a global supplier of automotive parts, Kelson, a tier-one provider of mechanical systems in the construction industry, and Technicore, tunneling and steel fabrication.
Within the wider York Region, manufacturing is again dominant. The region is the second-largest manufacturing hub in Ontario and fourth-largest in Canada, with more than 2,600 companies and 80,000 jobs. It accounts for $9.5 billion in annual manufacturing exports (York Link).
Motor vehicle parts manufacturing accounts for more than 11,000 jobs, while computer and electronic product manufacturing have a high specialization in the area, as does pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals manufacturing. Plastic product manufacturing in the region is large as well, consisting of more than 6,300 jobs.
York Region is home to Magna International, North America's largest auto parts manufacturer, as well as manufacturing household names such as Jeld-wen, Mars Canada and Siemens.
